From a Sty to Pink Eye: Let's Talk Eye Infections

Common Eye Infections

Most people have an eye infection at some point in their life. Let's talk about some of the most common eye infections we treat in our office.

    • Sty: A sty is a bump located in the eyelid, near the eyelashes. While a sty doesn't cause vision problems, it can be very uncomfortable. Signs of a stye include pain, redness, and swelling. Styes are contagious, and are commonly passed onto family members.
    • Pink Eye: Also known as conjunctivitis, pink eye is incredibly common, especially among school age children. Telltale signs of pink eye include itchy, watery, red eyes, as well as a gooey crust on the eye upon waking in the morning.
    • Ocular Herpes: Sometimes referred to as a cold sore on the eye, ocular herpes is caused by the herpes simplex 1 virus. This is transmitted through contact with another person who has ocular herpes, or who has an active cold sore. Symptoms include watery eyes, a feeling that something is in the eye, sores on the eye, and eye infections that won't go away.
    • Acanthamoeba Keratitis: This parasitic infection is most common among contact lens wearers, and can actually threaten vision if left untreated. This parasite thrives in warm water. Contact lens wearers are most likely to contract this infection after wearing contact lenses in a pool or a hot tub.

Eye Infection Treatment

If you notice any signs that your eyes are not functioning as normal, it's highly possible that you have an eye infection. It's important that you seek treatment from an optometrist right away, as many eye infections can eventually cause vision problems, and in severe cases, vision loss. Treatment for eye infections is often as simple as using prescription eye drops for a few days. When you come in for your appointment, we'll talk with you to understand your symptoms, examine your eye to find the cause of your discomfort, and come up with a treatment plan to help restore your eyes to their healthy state.
